In August of 2018 my family vacationed in Florida, using my fatherinlaw’s Diamond resorts timeshare. We were required to attend a sales presentation. The agents gave us numbers that were way too high. We explained there was no way we could afford it, we were living paycheck to paycheck with 3 teenage daughters. The floor manager came back with something we thought we could afford and offered us a dream holiday for 2 people to go to Hawaii for free, including airfare. That was huge for us in making this decision. We said we would want to bring our kids too. They told us that we would just have to pay a few hundred dollars per kid. We were sold on the Dream vacation to Hawaii.
We purchased 7500 points for a 10 year term product. They said it was a basic membership. Our monthly payment would be $207 a month and around $875 a year for maintenance fees. We didn’t have the money for the $3366 down payment, so they had us apply for a Barclaycard to charge $1959 down and finance the balance of the down payment at $214 a month for 6 months before starting loan payments.
A few months later we called to book the trip to Hawaii. It was a nightmare. We could not have 5 people in the room for the “free” trip. We would have to get 2 rooms. It would cost anywhere from $4000 to $6000. I was more than irritated, let down mentally and felt taken advantage of. We were stuck, we signed on the dotted line. This trip was one of the main reasons we said yes to the timeshare.
December of 2018 we accepted a free weekend getaway for the Red Lion in St. Louis supposedly to learn how to use our points. The motel was pretty outdated. We met with a consultant and asked questions about how to work the plan. There was not much input. The consultant called the floor manager. He didn’t do much except push us to upgrade our membership and to upgrade our Barclaycard. It was strange. He told us we could use the points for many things, airfare, can get cash back, and we could pay maintenance fees with points. When we said we weren’t interested they were more than happy to see us leave. The meeting wasn’t about teaching us or helping us. The sole purpose was to sell us more points.
In July of 1999 we booked a trip to Florida using my father in laws timeshare again. We stayed at Mystic Dunes. One of the customer service girls said that if we met with the sales team we would get a free trip. I was angry. I wanted to cancel the membership. The Florida sales person informed us that we had purchased a starter plan that needed to be upgraded to full membership. He was confused because he couldn’t find us in the system. He said if we didn’t upgrade we would have wasted our money and wouldn’t be able to use our membership’s full potential. He said what we bought wasn’t even a real membership. Most things we wouldn’t be able to do. He said that if we upgraded, even if we didn’t go on trips every year, we could purchase airfare, gift cards, and get cash back. There were alot of options. We felt like we didn’t have much choice. We had paid so far about $6000 for what we were told was useless.
We had to pay another $1200 for the down payment and other fees to upgrade. The program costs us double monthly than what we had been paying, and another large down payment was put on credit cards for basically the same amount of points. Our new payment is $408 a month and maintenance fees went up to $1856 a year.
We had a trip we were planning for 2020. The consultant said he would take care of us. If we ever needed anything he would help us. That was far from the truth. I reached out to get help to figure out how to book a trip to Cancun. He told me to call the hotline number because he was busy.
After upgrading the plan, we ended up with 22500 points. If we don’t use the points by the end of 2020 we will lose all but 7500 points. That is like losing 2 years of points.
We have a wedding in Cancun scheduled for October of 2020. When I searched through diamond resorts there are no rooms available. When I searched online through Priceline, there were rooms available, when I worked through the resort they had rooms available.
I am sick to my stomach. I can’t sleep and mentally struggle trying to figure out why we are going through this. We are honest, hard working people. We don’t deserve this. We have been scammed and lied to. What we had before was not worthless. We could have used that program. Instead we have an outstanding loan of $23516 as of May 2020. We have paid in over $12000 past 2 years and have not been able to use our timeshare membership. All we have gotten from this membership is a huge headache and a lot of empty promises.
I felt obligated because I signed on the dotted line but then realized these company “consultants” have been far from honest. I feel violated and honestly pretty angry. We have been lied to on so many different levels.
I deleted the surepay ACH information in December 2019 for the payment to come out of my checking account and started paying by credit card. My husband's income permanently decreased by $400 a month in december and we didn’t have the income to pay for the timeshare.
I had sent a request through Diamond resorts transitions to give back the membership, we would lose the 12,000 we have paid in already and would have to pay another fee of $1000.00 for processing fees.
They declined on June 3rd, 2020 and June 24, 2020.
May of 2020 the amount of 408.00 came out of my checking account unauthorized and I am fighting the charge, my bank credited our account and challenged the charge.
I received a letter on 6-22-20 advising us that our rate has been raised to 17.58% and payment amount is raising to $437.09. Stating that because our surepay was cancelled this is occurring. I cancelled the surpay January of 2020.
I am not approving any other payments to come out of my checking account or credit cards. The craziness needs to end. Based on our experience, this company is just out for money.
