KEY WEST – The interior design firm The Lubner Group just completed the total renovation and installation of new furnishings for five Old Conch-style buildings at the Coconut Beach Resort in Key West, Florida, positioning the timeshare vacation resort to enter a new phase in its legendary history.

Located at 1500 Alberta St. on the Atlantic side of Key West, the vacation ownership resort is set against lush gardens and quiet walkways with white verandahs and French doors opening to the sea. The Lubner Group’s design challenge was to blend existing Victorian gingerbread architecture – buildings seeped in rich history – with a fresh lifestyle approach in an updated tropical design. The idea was to let guests appreciate the historic beauty of the property while providing them with an opportunity to relax in serene tranquility.

The amenities there include a pool, Jacuzzi, and private beach. The resort has been named an Interval International Select Resort.

The Lubner Group completed the six-month total interior renovation project in three phases. Work included the selection of all furniture, fixtures and equipment for the 32 one- and two-bedroom/two bath units, as well as the resort’s lobby. The Lubner Group also provided design direction for the kitchen and bath cabinetry and flooring.

An important requirement was to create a unified design package for each of the five buildings. Two of those buildings used to be single-family homes. The room sizes ranged from 800 to 1,150 square feet and different ceiling heights. The design firm was also responsible for
the organization of suppliers and installers, ensuring that work was completed with limited inconvenience to guests during continuous high occupancy levels at this timeshare property.

According to Nancy Woodhouse, Lubner Group’s vice president of design and product development and designer director for this property, the intention at Coconut Beach Resort was to embrace an easy living lifestyle by designing and crafting comfortable, yet durable pieces that are eco-friendly.

“It was important to achieve a timeless design that would last many years, reflecting the vibrant color palette and charm of Key West while preserving the inspiration of the original property, which the owners requested,” Woodhouse said. “An extra touch included the addition of custom logo inspired hardware and hand-etched mirrors for each unit.”

With corporate offices and a warehouse in Fort Myers, Florida, plus an additional office in Orlando, the Lubner Group is a single-source provider of interior design, manufacturing and purchasing-related services for hospitality industries. Lubner Group provides custom-designed furnishings that are unique to each property. Lubner can be reached at 239-292-3717.

The Coconut Beach Resort property once belonged to the late Sen. John Spottswood. It was further developed by the Spottswood family and The Sita Group, the marketing firm owned by John Sims and Fawni Spottswood. The Spottswood family has been deeply involved in

Key West real estate, politics and society for over 150 years. Spottswood Companies, Inc. and its affiliates are based in Key West, Florida, and own all or some interest in numerous hotel, timeshare, marina and commercial properties in the Florida Keys and throughout the United States. Over the past 15 years, SCI has developed dozens of properties in the Florida Keys with more than 1,000 residential and transient units and 300,000 square feet of commercial space, and today has more than 300 employees and over 1,000 hotel rooms under management.
