Timeshare Scams and Fraud
Beware of "Linda Friedlander" - Craigslist offer
Have had an ad on Craigslist for my timeshare. Was contacted and had my suspicions but the final email (below) sealed that this is indeed a scam. Beware!
Many thanks for your patience.
Just to let you know that I had to travel and will be away from home for the next 10 weeks. I do not know if I have mentioned this before but I have a disability. I was informed by the Audiology Center which I am registered with that a new hearing aid which is supposed to be able to restore 30% of my hearing ability has just been delivered and they would like to do a trial run. This is impromptu so I had to make speedy arrangements as the timeshare purchase is important to me too.
I tried to reach my broker Richard Smith for the last couple of days but I got an auto responder that he is currently out of the country on vacation. As I am unable to reach him, I cannot determine where/how to send his fees as well as closing fees. I have however forwarded your contact information and expect him to be in touch with you as soon as he receives my email messages. Richard's email is [email protected]. His phone number is (504) 517-2064. You could also try to reach him in the interim.
As I could not contact Richard to get closing and broker fees to him, I visited my bank and got a certified check for $2,900 which I have also mailed to you. Upon receipt, please deposit check, then deduct your earnest deposit of $500. This is to affirm my seriousness to buy this property and fend off other offers. Then, forward the balance $2,400 to Richard Smith as his fees whenever he receives my email messages and gets in touch. The $2,400 is to cover the escrow, resort charges and closing fees along with broker fees. I am sure Richard will provide additional instructions on how to get fees to him. Note that the $2,400 is NOT coming out of the agreed timeshare price and is solely my responsibility. This will be clearly stated in the purchase contract which will be forwarded to you.
This arrangement is to circumvent any delays with the closing. Please watch out for any mails to your address and let me know when you receive my check. Although I am away from home, I would still have access regularly to my email and would be in touch throughout the process. If you need to reach me quickly, you can send me a text message on 708-298-5866.
Thanks for your understanding and apologies for any inconveniences. Please respond to this email so I am aware that you have received my message and information.
Sincerely,
Linda Friedlander
